Ice Rink and Sledding hill: students use the rink that is built and maintained by town volunteers during recess, but also PE classes and the afterschool program, as part of their place-based education program. Skates and helmets are provided to students. The ice rink is open to community members after school hours and during the weekend. The sledding hill is often open for students during recess and sleds are also provided.
Ski Runners: Our students have access to Ski Runners, a weekly program run by Saskedena Six in Pomfret to teach elementary school students of all level to ski or snowboard. We provide bussing to and from the slopes. This is not a free program, and students need to provide their own skis, helmets, and boots.
Cross-Country Ski and Snowshoe program: As a free alternative to Ski Runners, we provide a 6- 8 weeks program (depending on weather) at Downer Forest for anyone interested to learn cross-country. We provide bussing to and from Downer Forest. Skis, snowshoe, shoes, and poles are all provided by the school, thanks to generous donations from the Sharon PTO and John Sears.
Outdoor Education: All year long, in all weather, we continue exploring our surroundings, and using the outside as our classroom. There is a lot happening even in winter, from tracking animals, to making maple syrup.
