Newsletter from Mr. Williams

Dear Sharon Elementary School Parents and Guardians:

On behalf of the SES staff and myself, we would like to wish you and your child(ren) a happy and exciting upcoming school year.  You should be receiving a welcome back letter from your child’s classroom teacher about the upcoming year.  As always we have had an extremely busy summer with the One Planet program going on in conjunction with our annual summer cleaning.  Tim, Dave, Kody and Brent have worked very hard to prepare the school for children.  We have fresh paint in the halls, new carpet in the k-4 hallway, an outdoor makerspace for kids to use at recess, new walkways leading out to the preschool and many other small improvements.

We have many new and exciting initiatives happening here at Sharon Elementary School this year.  We have an advisory system that teachers developed over the summer to help connect kids with adults and focus on the social emotional well-being of all our kids.  Our Sprouts committee and much of our place based, hands-on learning will be around composting as we have written several grants to help support the development of a sustainable compost system.  We hope to continue to develop our makerspace resources and provide a place for kids to build and create at recess or as a class, if and when teachers so choose.

In accordance with the SU strategic plan our staff will be provided professional development around instruction and best practices in literacy by taking a class through the Sterns Center. In addition to the work we are doing with the Sterns Center, we will continue to have access to Shirley Ferguson, curriculum coordinator, and Mary Ellen Simmons, curriculum coordinator and math specialist as part of our weekly professional development time.

We are excited about the start of school and are confident we are going to have a great year.  We still have a couple of part time pre-school positions to hire but are excited to have Tracy Hazen joining us in the kindergarten as the classroom aide.

I hope you enjoy your last couple of weeks of summer vacation.  We look forward to seeing everyone back at SES on August 31st as we begin an exciting year of learning together.  Please see the outline our open house and first day celebration on the back of this letter.

One Planet information for the upcoming school year will be sent to families and will also be posted on the school and district website when it becomes available.  If at anytime you have questions or concerns please contact me here at school at your convenience.

  • Open house this year is on Tuesday August 30th from 5:30-6:30.  We will meet in the gym where I will introduce the faculty and staff at Sharon and say a few words before releasing folks to visit classrooms.  While this is not as formal, teachers will have packets of information and be available to answer questions.
  • 1st day at Sharon is a celebration of the start of school.  Parents are welcome to attend the first day festivities with their children.  It is a half-day and we ask that if you leave early to please notify your child’s classroom teacher.
  • Bus routes and One Planet information will be mailed out separately before the start of school.  You may drop your child off at 7:15 a.m. and pick them up at 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon. Please wait in the gym to pick your child up in the afternoon so that we can keep the lobby area clear.
  • Remember that summer reading logs should be getting filled out for those who want to participate in special school events and field trips for our summer readers.

Sincerely,

Barrett Williams, Principal
